Brief
As a team of designers, we were to create a philosophy that encapsulates our groups values and goals, and produce a toy/experience for children that is educational. In order to find our topic, we needed to look back into our own childhoods to see what still stuck with us today. The biggest word that popped up during our process was imagination.
Philosophy
In today's fast paced world that promotes technology, efficiency, and consumerism, design needs to look back to its roots in nature to inspire curiosity, foster trust, and build connections. Our society has become a place where imagination is a lost art and instant gratification captures attention. Design should be sustainable, emphasizing intentionality and high quality craftsmanship with the focus of bettering humanity.
Influences
William Morris: He believed in creating beautiful, functional, and affordable things for all people. He was as an advocate for sustainability, and valued thoughtful design. His philosophy is relevant today, especially with Ai, consumerism, and the idea of quantity before quality.
Brand Story
Children need outlets where their imagination can be nurtured, not replaced. We needed to create something that gives children space away from electronics, something that encourages problem solving, and something that helps develop skills, confidence, and imagination. What better way is there for kids to explore these concepts than through clothes. Kids are always wanting to wear their favorite outfits no matter how impractical they are and parents struggle to always say yes to these choices. We wanted to make a space where you can meet in the middle. Bobbin & Co. is a company that creatives interactive books for children to create their own clothing. The bobbin is the thread underneath tying all the details together. We added to wings to go with our slogan 'imagination taking flight'. The colors were kept primary and playful for the childlike appeal. Our heading typeface was Ivers Oblique, made by one of our team members. An icon system was also produced to keep clarity and cohesion.
Touchpoints
Our 'My Everyday' interactive book includes fill in pages, cut outs, and story telling to keep the experience exciting. Once they finish filling out the pages, parents scan it into the website, and we send back their fully customized creation. These articles of clothing also include removable features so the child can continue to customize. All of the elements pictured were physically made by our team in house. Takeaways
I found this project insightful for looking to the past and how it can greatly affect the design choices we make today. Even looking back into each of our childhood's is what made this project what it was. This results not only in a thoughtful direction but something that has real emotion and drive behind it. In the end, we created something really effective and well rounded.
Made for educational purposes.
